SACHS RCS 184 Racing Clutch, Sintered Metal 2.6 mm

The SACHS RCS 184 sintered metal clutch from ZF-Motorsport is a modular 184 mm clutch system for heavily loaded motorsport drivetrains. The series combines compact design, low rotating mass, high torque capacity and very direct torque transfer. Typical applications include race cars, rally cars, touring cars, GT sprint cars, prototypes and high-performance motorsport projects with sequential or dog-engagement gearboxes.

This category includes SACHS RCS 184 racing clutches with sintered metal 2.6 mm friction discs. The designation S2.6 describes a sintered metal clutch disc with 2.6 mm lining thickness. The friction lining is sintered directly onto the clutch carrier and therefore differs technically from Sinter Pad friction discs with individual friction segments.

Technical variants of the RCS 184 sintered metal series

The variants differ mainly in the number of friction discs, the transferable torque capacity and the thermal reserve. More friction discs increase the effective friction surface and allow higher torque transfer in a compact design. The RCS 184 sintered metal version with 2.6 mm lining thickness is designed for fast response, low mass moment of inertia and very direct torque engagement.

Version Torque capacity Design Technical classification
SACHS RCS 1/184-N-S2.6 385 Nm Single-plate racing clutch with 184 mm diameter Compact version with low release force and fast response
SACHS RCS 1/184-H-S2.6 654 Nm Single-plate racing clutch with 184 mm diameter Increased clamp load for more torque reserve within the same clutch size
SACHS RCS 2/184-H-S2.6 1,308 Nm Twin-plate racing clutch with 184 mm diameter High torque capacity in a compact design with reduced mass moment of inertia
SACHS RCS 3/184-H-S2.6 1,962 Nm Triple-plate racing clutch with 184 mm diameter More friction surface and thermal reserve for very high load
SACHS RCS 4/184-H-S2.6 2,616 Nm Four-plate racing clutch with 184 mm diameter Maximum torque capacity within the RCS 184 sintered metal series

Directly sintered sintered metal lining

In the RCS 184 Sinter S2.6 version, the metallic friction lining is bonded directly to the clutch carrier. This design reduces the mass and installation height of the friction disc and provides high rigidity. The result is a clearly defined bite point, fast response during clutch engagement and very direct torque transfer.

The low lining thickness of 2.6 mm supports rapid engine-speed changes and spontaneous engine response. At the same time, the multi-plate design enables very high torque values within the compact 184 mm size. Compared with Sinter Pad versions, this friction disc is designed for lower mass, more compact installation height and especially fast response.

Sintered metal 2.6, Sinter Pad, Organic or carbon: technical classification

The choice of friction material and lining thickness affects response, temperature resistance, wear behaviour and drivetrain load. Sintered metal 2.6 mm provides very direct friction characteristics with low installation height and reduced mass. Sinter Pad versions offer more wear volume, Organic is softer and easier to modulate, while carbon is used for very high thermal loads and particularly compact high-performance applications.

The SACHS RCS 184 racing clutch with sintered metal 2.6 mm friction discs is therefore a suitable technical choice when fast response, low rotating mass and high torque capacity are the main priorities. For applications requiring particularly high wear volume, a Sinter Pad version may be suitable; for softer engagement, an organic version, and for maximum temperature load, a carbon clutch.

Technical selection: torque, friction discs and hub profile

When selecting the correct SACHS RCS 184 sintered metal clutch, engine power, maximum engine torque and the thermal load limit are decisive. The specified transferable torque describes the maximum transferable engine torque of the respective version without any additional safety margin. Depending on application, vehicle weight, tyre grip, gear ratio, starting load, temperature development and load duration, the clutch should be adequately sized or deliberately oversized.

A clutch operated continuously close to its maximum torque capacity may be exposed to higher thermal and mechanical load. For applications with high starting torque, frequent starts, strong grip or long load duration, a larger torque reserve is advisable. Sizing should therefore be based on the real vehicle load and not only on theoretical engine torque.

In addition to torque capacity, flywheel, release system, release travel, installation height and the correct hub profile for the gearbox input shaft are decisive. The RCS 184 sintered metal 2.6 mm versions are designed for stepped flywheels and, depending on the variant, are available with 44 or 49 mm release diameter.

Frequently asked questions about the SACHS RCS 184 sintered metal 2.6 mm clutch
