Designed to make a
difference

ZF Race Engineering's SACHS motorsport clutches have stood for top-tier quality in international racing for decades. The ambition: continuous improvement and the drive to keep pushing the limits. From the lightest clutch used in Formula 1 to proven twin-plate and multi-plate systems in WRC, DTM, NASCAR, Le Mans and the Dakar Rally - ZF Motorsport technology is a core component of many winning cars worldwide.

SACHS racing clutch
RCS 3/184 S2.6

Sintered metallic 2,6 mm, rigid design

The triple-plate SACHS RCS 3/184 racing clutch with 2,6 mm sintered metallic lining combines very high torque capacity with low rotating mass. Three friction discs increase the transmissible force significantly at the same clamp load and friction level, while the thin lining enables direct response and short reaction times. Ideal for high powered touring cars and circuit or time attack use where precise clutch modulation and repeatability are critical.

The sintered metallic friction material remains stable at speed within the relevant operating window and delivers a fast, clearly defined engagement. The 2,6 mm configuration lowers the clutch pack's moment of inertia - the engine picks up revs more freely, and the bite point stays precise and reproducible. At the same time, the triple-plate layout spreads the friction work across multiple contact surfaces, reducing specific surface pressure and smoothing temperature peaks.

This setup achieves up to 1.962 Nm maximum engine torque and, in combination with a stiff clutch cover (housing) plus high strength steel pressure and intermediate plates, forms a durable, repeatable system for pure motorsport use.

Advantages

Light

low clutch height

Low mass and inertia

Less Mass

One of the greatest strengths of the RCS sintered clutch is its low mass and the associated low mass inertia.

The SACHS RCS clutches have been designed for racing with the objective that torque is transmitted rapidly and directly from the engine to the gearbox.

Reducing the weight of the crankshaft drive to lower the moment of inertia will considerably increase vehicle acceleration performance in the lower gears.

Faster Acceleration

If the clutch itself has a moment of inertia (MoI) of 0.061 kgm2, the MoI on the drive wheel will be 180 times higher (in first gear) for a reduction in transmission of 13.4:1 (13.42). If we convert this value into vehicle mass, we arrive around 145 kg of additional weight to be accelerated in first gear.

As a result of the low moment of inertia of the SACHS RCS clutch, shifting times are considerably reduced and the vehicle accelerates much faster.

Technology

Technical data RCS 3/184:

  • Maximum engine torque [Nm] : 1.962
  • Release diameter [mm] : 49 / 44
  • Release force [N] : 4.300 / 3.900 (⌀ 44)
  • Release travel [mm] : 5.0 +0.5
  • Mass (weight) [kg] : 4.11 / 4.17 (⌀ 44)
  • Moment of inertia [kgm2] : 0.022582 / 0.023029)

Clutch cover (housing)

The ZF Motorsport SACHS RCS 184 clutch cover is made from high strength forged aluminum and engineered for maximum stiffness at minimum weight. The specific housing geometry supports efficient heat dissipation and stabilizes the clutch pack's temperature window.

A key feature is the extremely wear resistant, patented aluminum coating. This full surface hard coating reduces friction and fit wear, protects against corrosion, and ensures high service life.

Friction lining - sintered metallic

The RCS 3/184 uses 2,6 mm on-sintered metallic linings: the friction lining is bonded directly to the carrier disc (no pads). This reduces part count and mass, increases stiffness of the friction pairing, and minimizes lining compressibility. The result is a very precise bite point, short response times, and a clearly defined engagement.

The low lining thickness reduces the rotating moment of inertia of the clutch pack; the engine revs more freely and load changes are executed more spontaneously. Direct heat transfer into the carrier disc quickly dissipates friction heat, improving repeatability during launch sequences. In combination with three friction discs, this yields high torque reserve with low specific surface pressure.

SACHS RCS hub

ZF Motorsport supplies the SACHS RCS 3/184 S2.6 racing clutches with different hub profiles precisely matched to the respective gearbox input shaft. This guarantees maximum fit accuracy, reliable torque transfer, and durability in hard motorsport use.

Hubs are also available in various length options (short, medium, long) to match the available installation space and ensure correct actuation. The modular RCS 184 system from ZF Motorsport enables an individually tuned racing clutch with maximum performance, thermal stability, and service life. Standard configuration of the RCS 3/184 clutch (unless specified otherwise): hub length long–medium–long.

Installation instructions:

As SACHS RCS clutches have not been developed specifically for a vehicle, but are vehicle-independent, the vehicle must be adapted to the clutch (see PDF documents above). The contour of the flywheel, the position, the travel and the shape of the release mechanism as well as the maximum available installation space must be checked and adapted if necessary.

Required information:

When ordering your SACHS RCS clutch, the required profile of the transmission input shaft must be specified. The different profiles offered are listed under „hub profile“.
