The BMW Z1 was a visionary roadster developed from 1989 to 1991 by BMW Technik GmbH, the company's in-house think tank, and produced in just 8,000 units. The 2.5-litre inline-six producing 170 PS came from the 325i and propelled the lightweight 1,250 kg Z1 with its unique vertically sliding doors that dropped into the sills into a new era of open-top driving. The composite body panels could be individually removed and refitted in different colours — a concept unique to this day.
