Alpina was founded in 1965 by Burkard Bovensiepen in Buchloe, Bavaria, and has been recognised as an independent automobile manufacturer by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority since 1983 — not just a tuner, but an official vehicle manufacturer. The Alpina B10 Biturbo, producing 265 kW (360 PS) from a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre inline six-cylinder, was the fastest production saloon in the world when introduced in 1989 and a milestone in biturbo technology. Alpina's Biturbo technology set new benchmarks in the late 1980s, establishing the brand as the reference for high-performance vehicles based on BMW.
