The BMW 8 Series E31 (1990–1999) was BMW's technological flagship costing around $1 billion to develop — only 30,621 were produced in nine years. The 840i with the M60 4.0-litre V8 and 210 kW was the entry to the E31 world from 1993 to 1996, offering the V8 alternative to the V12 — though an M8 prototype existed, an official M8 model never reached production. With its pop-up headlights and flat silhouette, the E31 was a grand tourer ahead of its time and remains highly sought after by collectors.
