The Audi A4 B5 succeeded the Audi 80 in 1994 as the first model under the A4 name, built on the VW B5 platform PL45. The 1.8-litre naturally aspirated engine with 92-95 kW was the solid base petrol engine in the A4 B5 featuring the proven five-valve technology. With the innovative five-valve technology in the 1.8T, the B5 set technical benchmarks, while on the race track in 1996 it was so dominant that AWD was banned from touring car racing.
