As successor to the Audi 80, the A4 B5 introduced the A4 name from 1994 and offered a broad engine range on the VW B5 platform. The 2.8 V6 quattro with 142 kW (193 PS) and permanent all-wheel drive was the most powerful regular naturally aspirated variant in the A4 B5. On the race track, the A4 B5 made history: in 1996, Frank Biela won the BTCC Drivers' Championship, Audi won seven national touring car championships worldwide, ultimately forcing AWD to be banned from touring car racing.
