As the first luxury sedan with a fully aluminium body, the Audi A8 D2 revolutionised lightweight construction in the executive class from 1994 — the Audi Space Frame (ASF) was co-developed with Alcoa. The 2.8-litre V6 was the entry-level engine for the A8 and benefited especially from the low weight of the aluminium body, lending it unusual agility for the class. Thanks to its aluminium construction, the A8 weighed significantly less than comparable steel-bodied competitors despite its size, positively impacting agility and fuel consumption.
