As successor to the Audi 80, the A4 B5 was the first model under the new A4 name from 1994, built on the VW B5 platform PL45. The quattro version of the 1.8-litre naturally aspirated engine combined the reliable four-cylinder with permanent all-wheel drive for secure traction. In 1996 touring car racing, the A4 B5 quattro proved its superiority so impressively that Frank Biela won the BTCC title and Audi won all touring car championships in seven countries — AWD was subsequently banned.
