The BMW X1 launched in 2009 as the brand's most compact SAV: the E84 still on the rear-wheel drive 3 Series base, the F48 from 2015 on the more efficient UKL front-wheel drive platform. The sDrive 16i was the most accessible entry to the X1 world with the signature BMW driving experience in compact SAV form. The BMW X2 (F39) arrived in 2017 as a sportier crossover variant with a lower roofline and more dynamic design.
