The BMW E3 'New Six' (1968–1977) was BMW's first luxury saloon with inline-six engine and laid the foundation for the later 5 Series and 7 Series. The 3.0 S with 180 PS from the inline-six was the heart of the E3 range — powerful and dignified. With the E3, BMW proved for the first time that a sporting saloon could compete in the luxury class — a concept that defines the brand to this day.
