Abarth was founded in 1949 by Carlo Abarth (born Karl Abarth in Vienna in 1908) in Turin and rose to worldwide fame from the 1950s as Fiat's tuning partner. The tradition of tuning Fiat models began in the 1950s and led to legendary vehicles such as the original Abarth 595 and 695 of the 1960s. After Fiat's acquisition in 1971, Abarth was revived in 2007 as a performance sub-brand, and the modern 500/595/695 models with their 1.4-litre T-Jet turbo engine in various power levels are a direct homage to those icons — including the esseesse kits that continue the tradition of the legendary SS tuning packages of the past. The scorpion logo derives from Carlo Abarth's zodiac sign and became the symbol of a brand that earned the nickname Giant Killer with over 7,400 racing victories and 10 world speed records in the 1950s and 1960s — small cars that defeated far more powerful rivals on the track.
