As successor to the Audi 80, the A4 B5 was the first model under the new A4 name from 1994, built on the VW B5 platform PL45. The 2.7 V6 biturbo with 169 kW (230 PS) formed the basis for the high-performance engines in the S4 and RS4, using two small turbochargers for seamless throttle response. In 1996 touring car racing, the A4 B5 quattro proved its superiority so impressively that Frank Biela won the BTCC title and Audi won all touring car championships in seven countries — AWD was subsequently banned.
